On top of the ticket, you pay separately for Petra by Night, official guides, club cars, some viewpoints and some 4x4 transfers. If you want a guide for the Main Trail, the Petra 3-hour private guided tour with hotel pickup (4.8 from 96 reviews) collects you from your Wadi Musa hotel and walks the Main Trail with you. Its listing is clear that the 50 JOD entry ticket is not included, which is the pattern on most Petra tours.
Petra Ticket Prices for 1, 2 and 3 Days
The second day costs 5 JD. That is the most useful number on this page.
How much is Petra for one day? 50 JD
For an international traveller staying overnight in Jordan, the standard one-day ticket is 50 JD. It gives you daytime admission to Petra Archaeological Park. A single full day is enough to see many of Petra’s principal sights: the Siq, the Treasury, the Street of Facades, the Theatre, the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street and Qasr Al-Bint. With enough time and energy you can continue to the Monastery.
Petra 2-day ticket: 55 JD
The two-day ticket costs 55 JD, only 5 JD more than a single day, according to the official fee page. If you are already staying two nights in Wadi Musa, the extra cost of going back for a second day is very small. A second day gives you far more flexibility for the Monastery, the Royal Tombs, the High Place of Sacrifice, the viewpoints, photography, the hiking trails and a slower pace. If you bought a one-day ticket and want more, the official fee page says a 50 JD ticket can be extended by paying another 5 JD, at the Visitor Center only.
Petra 3-day ticket: 60 JD
The three-day ticket costs 60 JD. It makes sense if you are a keen hiker, interested in archaeology, a photographer, travelling slowly or exploring the less-visited trails. The three days must be consecutive. Our two-day versus three-day itinerary shows how a longer Petra visit fits with a night in Wadi Rum.
Your ticket covers the ancient city; around it, travellers book guided Petra tours along the Main Trail, Petra by Night in front of the Treasury, visits to Little Petra, hotel stays in Wadi Musa, and the drive south to the jeep tours and desert camps of Wadi Rum.
Why Is Petra 90 JD for Some Visitors?
Both prices you see online are correct. Which one you pay depends on whether you have slept in Jordan.
The official Petra pricing separates visitors who are staying in Jordan from non-accommodated visitors. A one-day ticket for someone who has not stayed overnight in Jordan costs 90 JD; an accommodated international visitor pays 50 JD for the same day. The higher rate is aimed at same-day trips across the border or from a cruise ship. If you can, sleep in Jordan before your Petra day and buy the ticket the next morning. Our Jordan Pass guide covers the refund route for travellers who pay 90 JD on arrival day and then stay.
Are children free at Petra?
Yes, for younger children. The official fee information currently states that children under 12 enter free during daylight visiting hours. The age limits for other experiences are not always the same: at Petra by Night, children under 10 currently go free.
What Does a Petra Ticket Include, and What Is Extra?
A Petra day often costs more than the 50 JD ticket.
What the ticket includes
A normal daytime ticket gives you access to Petra Archaeological Park during official opening hours. The sights it lets you reach include:
- Bab Al Siq
- the Siq
- the Treasury
- the Theatre
- the Royal Tombs
- the Colonnaded Street
- the Great Temple area
- Qasr Al-Bint
- the Monastery
- various hiking routes and viewpoints
What is not included in the standard ticket
Depending on what you want to do, you may pay separately for:
- Petra by Night
- private guides
- club cars
- certain panoramic viewpoints
- some 4x4 transfers
- food and drinks
- transport to Petra
- organised tours
The sections below give the official prices for each.
Is Petra by Night Included in the Petra Ticket?
No. Petra by Night needs its own 30 JD ticket.
The official Petra by Night page lists the price as 30 JD per person, and children under 10 can currently attend free. The night ticket does not include a daytime visit, and the official fee page adds that you need a valid daytime admission ticket to attend. Our Petra by Night guide covers what the evening involves.
If you would rather have the evening organised from Amman, the Amman: Petra by Night Tour with Optional Day Visit is rated 4.9 from 39 reviews. Check its listing for which tickets the price covers.
Is Petra by Night included in the Jordan Pass?
No. Even if your Jordan Pass includes Petra, you still buy the separate Petra by Night ticket.
How Much Does a Petra Guide Cost?
Guides are optional and charged on top of the entrance ticket.
Licensed guides can be arranged through the Petra Visitor Center. The current official prices are:
| Guided route | Price |
|---|---|
| Main Trail | 50 JD |
| Main Trail + High Place | 100 JD |
| Main Trail + Monastery | 100 JD |
Do you need a guide at Petra?
No. You can explore Petra independently. A guide earns the fee if you are interested in Nabataean history, architecture, the water systems, ancient religion or the archaeology behind what you are looking at. A popular compromise is to hire a guide for the Main Trail and explore the rest of Petra on your own.
You can also book that guide before you arrive. The 3-hour private guided tour of Petra covers the Main Trail with free time afterwards; hotel drop-off is not included. Coming from Amman for the day, the private full-day Petra tour from Amman or the airport (4.9 from 428 reviews) puts the transport and a licensed guide in one booking. Our best Petra tours guide compares the rest.
Petra Club Car Prices
Electric club cars run on selected routes, separate from normal admission.
Club cars are especially useful for older visitors, travellers with limited mobility and anyone struggling with the amount of walking. The official fee page currently lists:
| Service | Distance | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor Center to the Treasury, one way | 4 km | 15 JD |
| Visitor Center to the Treasury, return | 8 km | 25 JD |
| Theatre to Qasr Al-Bint, one way | 1 km | 10 JD |
| Theatre to Qasr Al-Bint, return | 2 km | 15 JD |
| Viewpoint opposite the Treasury | 15 JD | |
| 4x4 from the Cultural Village to the Monastery Trail, one way | 5 JD per person, daily 7:30 am to 3:00 pm |
Golf carts run daily from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, need no advance booking, and you can arrange the return journey when you pay. They also run during Petra by Night for elderly visitors and people with disabilities. Payment is in cash in Jordanian dinars or by Visa card. Vehicle services and prices change, so check the official fee page before you travel.
Jordan Pass vs a Standalone Petra Ticket
The ticket is cheaper on its own. The pass can change the sum once the visa is counted.
The Jordan Pass combines Petra admission with entry to more than 40 participating attractions across Jordan. It comes in three versions, priced on the official Jordan Pass prices page:
| Version | Petra days | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Jordan Wanderer | 1 day | 70 JD |
| Jordan Explorer | 2 consecutive days | 75 JD |
| Jordan Expert | 3 consecutive days | 80 JD |
Under the programme’s conditions, travellers who buy the pass before arriving and stay a minimum of two nights (three days) in Jordan also have the tourist entry visa fee waived. At first glance the standard Petra ticket is cheaper, but the pass adds the other attractions and may remove your visa cost, which can turn the calculation around. Look at the Jordan Pass especially if:
- you are visiting Petra
- you are spending several days in Jordan
- you qualify for the visa-fee waiver
- you plan to visit other included attractions
The full arithmetic, tier by tier, is in our Jordan Pass guide.
Where to Buy Petra Tickets
At the Petra Visitor Center in Wadi Musa, or online through the Petra Pass system.
Can you buy Petra tickets at the Visitor Center?
Yes. The official Petra FAQ says tickets can be bought at the Petra Visitor Center in Wadi Musa, which also has information, maps, brochures and guide arrangements. It is the starting point for most first-time visitors. Bring your passport: the official fee page says visitors must present one at the ticket office.
Can you buy Petra tickets online?
The same FAQ says tickets can also be bought online through the Petra Pass system. If you are going for the Jordan Pass instead, buy it through the official Jordan Pass website. Searching for “Petra tickets” brings up three different things, so keep them apart:
- Petra admission
- the Jordan Pass
- commercial tours
How Much Should You Budget for Petra?
These examples exclude transport and meals.
| Visit | What you pay | Core cost |
|---|---|---|
| Budget independent visit | 1-day ticket 50 JD; no guide; no optional transport; food and drinks variable | 50 JD |
| Guided independent visit | Petra admission 50 JD + Main Trail guide 50 JD | 100 JD |
| Petra + Petra by Night | Daytime admission 50 JD + Petra by Night 30 JD | 80 JD |
Does an organised Petra tour include the entrance fee?
Sometimes, so do not assume. A tour may include transport only; transport and a guide; transport and admission; transport, admission and a guide; lunch; or hotel pickup. Always read the “included” and “not included” sections before comparing prices, because a cheaper tour can end up costing more once you add the entrance fee. The most-reviewed tour on this site, the Petra, Wadi Rum & Dead Sea 2-Day Tour (4.9 from 1,563 reviews, from $249), lists the Petra and Wadi Rum entry fees as paid on site. Our tour comparison shows which listings fold the fees in.
