Wadi Rum From Aqaba: Day Trips, Tours and Transport

Wadi Rum is one of the easiest major sights in Jordan to add to a stay in Aqaba. Aqaba gives you the Red Sea: beaches, diving, snorkelling and resorts. Wadi Rum gives you almost the opposite landscape: wide desert valleys, sandstone mountains, canyons, rock bridges, jeep tours and Bedouin-style camps. The two are close enough to visit the desert on a half-day trip, a full day, a sunset tour or an overnight stay. For most first-time visitors, the best plan is an afternoon jeep tour, sunset and a night at a desert camp, then back to Aqaba the next morning or on to Petra.

The short answer

The Best Way to See Wadi Rum From Aqaba

If you can spare one night, sleep in the desert. If you can’t, book a day trip with at least three or four hours in a jeep.

Leave Aqaba after lunch, take a jeep tour through the afternoon, watch the sunset and spend the night at a camp. The Wadi Rum: Bedouin Camp Stay, Full-Day Desert Tour with 3 Meals (4.9 from 290 reviews, from $47) covers the desert part in one booking: a guided tour with sandboarding and sunset, a private tent with its own bathroom, and dinner, breakfast and lunch. Its pickup is inside Wadi Rum, at the village or the Visitor Center. Transfers from outside Wadi Rum cost extra, so ask the camp for an Aqaba price or book the transfer separately (see private transfers below).

If your trip allows one night, an overnight in Wadi Rum usually gives you more than a simple out-and-back day trip from Aqaba.

Red Sea to desert

Is Wadi Rum Close to Aqaba?

Yes, especially compared with the drive from Amman.

UNESCO places the Wadi Rum Protected Area about 60 km north-east of Aqaba, and transfer operators describe the road journey as about an hour each way. From Amman it is a drive of four hours or so (our Amman to Wadi Rum guide covers that trip). That short drive is the reason Aqaba makes such a useful base for the desert.

You can leave your Aqaba hotel in the morning, explore the desert for several hours and be back the same day. Or you can travel to Wadi Rum in the afternoon, stay the night and return to Aqaba the following morning.

Carry your passport. Operators running the Aqaba road warn that police checkpoints check documents, and a stop there can add time to the journey.

Around Aqaba and Wadi Rum, travellers book Red Sea snorkelling and diving trips, glass-bottom boat cruises, Wadi Rum jeep tours, camel rides and Bedouin camp nights, and Petra day trips from the coast.

Sea and sand

Why Visit Wadi Rum From Aqaba?

The two places complement each other: one is for the water, the other for the desert.

In Aqaba you can spend your time

  • swimming
  • snorkelling
  • scuba diving
  • relaxing beside the Red Sea

In Wadi Rum you can

  • take a 4x4 jeep tour
  • walk through canyons
  • climb dunes
  • visit rock bridges
  • see ancient inscriptions
  • watch the sunset
  • stay in a desert camp
  • stargaze

If you are still choosing a base on the coast, compare hotels in Aqaba. A city-centre hotel keeps tour pickups simple, because some Aqaba operators charge extra to collect from the South Beach resorts or the airport.

1. Day trip

Wadi Rum Day Trip From Aqaba

Best for travellers staying in Aqaba who cannot spare a night.

A day trip is straightforward. A typical day looks like this:

  1. Morning — Aqaba to Wadi Rum

Pickup from your Aqaba hotel, the drive to Wadi Rum, and a meeting with your local desert guide.

  2. Late morning to afternoon — 4x4 jeep tour

Possible stops at dunes, canyons, rock formations, inscriptions, natural arches and viewpoints.

  3. Afternoon — Back towards Aqaba

The return drive to your hotel.

This is the simplest way to see Wadi Rum without changing hotels.

Is a Wadi Rum day trip from Aqaba worth it?

Yes. Unlike a Wadi Rum day trip from Amman, you do not spend most of the day on the road, so far more of the excursion is time in the desert. A day trip makes most sense if:

  • you are based in Aqaba for several nights
  • you already have accommodation booked
  • you do not want to stay in a desert camp
  • you want a 3- or 4-hour jeep tour

The main thing you miss is Wadi Rum after dark.

2. Half day

Half-Day Wadi Rum Tour From Aqaba

Best for very short itineraries.

A half-day excursion can include:

  • the transfer from Aqaba
  • a short jeep tour
  • several of the major sights
  • the return transfer

It works when Wadi Rum is an extra activity on a Red Sea holiday, not one of the main reasons for your Jordan trip. Don’t make the desert part too short, though. After the drive from Aqaba, a 2-hour jeep tour can feel brief. When you can, book a 3- or 4-hour jeep tour: it gives you a much better first impression.

Two GetYourGuide tours collect you in Aqaba. The From Aqaba: Wadi Rum Jeep Tour with Hotel Pickup & Drinks (5.0 from 10 reviews, from $97) runs about five hours door to door in a small group of up to eight, in an open-air safari vehicle, with lunch, sandboarding and a camel ride as options when you book. Pickup is from Aqaba city-centre hotels; the airport and South Beach hotels cost extra. Ten reviews is a small record, so read the recent ones first. The From Aqaba: Jeep Tour to Wadi Rum Desert (4.6 from 47 reviews, from $109) has the longer review record and lists the Wadi Rum entrance fee among its inclusions, but its jeep drive is the 2-hour kind, inside a 5-hour day.

3. Full day

Full-Day Wadi Rum Tour From Aqaba

Best for a more complete visit without staying the night.

A full day gives you far more flexibility. You may have time for:

  • a longer jeep tour
  • additional canyons
  • rock bridges
  • lunch
  • tea
  • short hikes
  • sunset

A full day is a good compromise if you want to be back in your Aqaba hotel that evening.

Our pick is the private Wadi Rum: Full-Day Tour, Lunch, Sandboarding, Camel Ride, Sunset (5.0 from 31 reviews, from $99), a 6 to 8 hour day with lunch, sandboarding on the red dunes, a camel ride and the sunset. It is listed under Aqaba on GetYourGuide, but the tour starts in Wadi Rum Village, so add a transfer to get there. Thirty-one reviews is still a small base, so check the recent feedback before booking.

4. Sunset

Sunset Wadi Rum Tour From Aqaba

Best for atmosphere and photography.

If you don’t mind getting back to Aqaba later, choose a tour timed around sunset. This schedule works well:

  1. Late morning or early afternoon

    Leave Aqaba.

  2. Afternoon

    Jeep tour.

  3. Late afternoon

    The final desert stops.

  4. Sunset

    A viewpoint.

  5. Evening

    Return to Aqaba.

You see Wadi Rum in very different light from a midday-only visit. The private Wadi Rum: Morning or Sunset Jeep Tour (5.0 from 309 reviews, from $44) has a four-hour afternoon departure that finishes at a sunset viewpoint. It starts in Wadi Rum Village, so pair it with a transfer from Aqaba that waits for you or collects you afterwards.

5. Overnight

Overnight Wadi Rum Tour From Aqaba

Best for first-time visitors with one night available, and the option to choose if your trip allows it.

A typical overnight trip can include:

  1. Aqaba pickup

  2. Transfer to Wadi Rum

  3. Jeep tour

  4. Sunset

  5. Transfer to camp

  6. Dinner

  7. A night at the camp

  8. Breakfast

  9. Return to Aqaba or an onward transfer

Is staying overnight worth it?

For most first-time visitors, yes. The point is not simply sleeping in a tent. You get to see Wadi Rum in the afternoon, at sunset, at night and at sunrise, and the landscape feels very different at each stage.

The Bedouin Camp Stay with a full-day desert tour is the one we would book for the night, with its private tents and three meals. It is run by a small family camp of 30 to 35 guests with no internet at the camp. Our where to stay in Wadi Rum and Wadi Rum camps compared guides cover the other kinds of camp, from simple tents to panoramic domes.

6. Private transfer

Aqaba to Wadi Rum by Private Transfer

Best for independent travellers.

You don’t need a complete tour package. You can arrange Aqaba hotel → Wadi Rum Visitor Center or Village and book your jeep tour separately. A private transfer gives you:

  • hotel pickup
  • a flexible departure
  • luggage space
  • a direct journey

It works particularly well for couples, families and small groups. The Wadi Rum: One-Way Transfer to/from Aqaba by Private Car (4.8 from 10 reviews, from $78 per car for up to four people) runs in either direction in an air-conditioned sedan at a fixed price, with Wadi Rum pickups from the Rest House, the Visitor Center or Disah. Lots of luggage can cost you a seat, and ten reviews is a small record, so read the recent ones before you book.

Can your Wadi Rum camp arrange pickup from Aqaba?

Often, yes. Before you book a separate taxi, ask your camp:

  • Do you provide Aqaba pickup?
  • Is it private or shared?
  • What is the price?
  • Where will you collect us?
  • Is the transfer to the camp included?
  • Can we begin our jeep tour as soon as we arrive?

Bundling the transfer with your camp can make the logistics much simpler.

7. Taxi

Aqaba to Wadi Rum by Taxi

Another straightforward option, as long as you agree the fare first.

Agree the fare before you set off, and confirm:

  1. the total price;
  2. the destination;
  3. the number of passengers;
  4. your luggage;
  5. whether the fare is per vehicle;
  6. whether waiting time is included.

This matters most if you want the taxi to wait during your Wadi Rum visit and take you back to Aqaba later. Taxis on this route come from Aqaba, and there is no taxi rank in the desert, so settle your return before you leave the city.

8. Rental car

Aqaba to Wadi Rum by Rental Car

Best for travellers touring Jordan independently.

A rental car works particularly well if your route is Aqaba → Wadi Rum → Petra or Petra → Wadi Rum → Aqaba. You travel on your own schedule and carry luggage easily.

Once you reach Wadi Rum, though, you normally explore the desert in a local 4x4 with a guide. An ordinary rental car stays at the village or the Visitor Center.

How long in the desert

What Jeep Tour Should You Choose From Aqaba?

For visitors coming all the way from Aqaba, four hours usually gives the best balance.

Jeep tourWho it suitsOur pick on GetYourGuide
2 hoursOnly a quick introductionMorning or Sunset 2-Hour Jeep Tour, 4.9 (94)
3 hoursA short day tripChoose 2 to 9 Hour Jeep Pass, 3-hour option, 4.6 (90)
4 hoursAn excellent first-time choiceMorning or Sunset Jeep Tour, 5.0 (309)
Full dayWhen Wadi Rum is one of your main prioritiesFull-Day Tour with Lunch, Camel Ride & Sunset, 5.0 (31)

All four start inside Wadi Rum, so add a transfer from Aqaba. Our jeep tour lengths compared guide shows what each length covers.

Jeep tour or camel ride?

If you only have a few hours, choose the jeep: it covers much more of Wadi Rum, and a camel ride works better as an extra. On an overnight trip, try a 4-hour jeep tour, sunset, the camp and a camel ride in the morning. You get two very different ways of seeing the desert. For the camel part, the Wadi Rum: Half-Day Camel Tour with Guide (5.0 from 19 reviews) rides from the village to Lawrence’s Spring and adds a private jeep tour. It meets at the Wadi Rum Rest Area, with free pickup from the Visitor Center. Nineteen reviews is a thin record, so read the recent ones.

Going on to Petra

Aqaba → Wadi Rum → Petra

If Petra is on your list, don’t automatically go back to Aqaba after the desert.

  1. Day 1 — Aqaba to Wadi Rum

Jeep tour, sunset and a night at a camp.

  2. Day 2 — Wadi Rum to Petra

The drive north to Wadi Musa.

  3. Day 3 — Petra

A full day at the site.

This route avoids needless backtracking. Our Petra to Wadi Rum transport guide covers the desert-to-Petra leg in both directions, and Petra day trip or overnight explains why a night in Wadi Musa before your Petra day helps.

Who is going

Wadi Rum for Different Travellers

The same desert, planned four ways.

Families

Consider a private 4x4, a 3- or 4-hour tour with frequent stops, and a private bathroom at the camp.

Couples

An overnight trip with a private jeep, sunset and an ensuite or panoramic tent works especially well.

Solo travellers

Compare public transport, shared transfers, shared jeep tours and camp packages. A small-group tour with Aqaba pickup, such as the Wadi Rum Jeep Tour with Hotel Pickup & Drinks, saves you paying for a whole car.

Photographers

Choose an afternoon departure, a private jeep, at least four hours, sunset, a night in the desert and sunrise.

How should I get from Aqaba to Wadi Rum?

Final recommendation

One Free Day? Book Four Hours. One Night? Sleep in the Desert

If you are based in Aqaba and have only one free day, book a Wadi Rum day trip with at least a 3- or 4-hour jeep tour. If you have one night, choose Aqaba → an afternoon jeep tour → sunset → a desert camp → sunrise → back to Aqaba or on to Petra. That is the better first visit.
